Is There Room for Reason in Religion? An Introduction to Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae

It seems that, besides the philosophical disciplines, we have no need of any further teaching.
— Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)

Thomas Aquinas begins his Summa Theologiae by asking whether reason and divine revelation are compatible, or whether each renders the other redundant. If human reason and perception are adequate for discovering all the truths about the world, why give credence to revelation? And if we trust that God will reveal to us all that we need to know, why labor with our frail minds and risk committing error? Dr. Christopher Wells (General Theological Seminary) will give an introduction to the opening of the Summa Theologiae and Thomas Aquinas’ argument for the compatibility of reason and revelation.
