Aristotle has had a profound influence on the history of science, but his contributions have received mixed reviews from the scientific community. Some scientists view Aristotle’s doctrines as impediments to progressive and fruitful research. Nevertheless, Charles Darwin wrote to a friend that while Linnaeus and Cuvier were his “two gods . . . they were mere school-boys to old Aristotle.” In this seminar, Taylor Pincin (Philosophy) will help us explore whether studying Aristotle is a worthwhile endeavor for modern scientists.
