Dignity Beyond Accomplishment

  • Earl Hall 2980 Broadway New York, NY, 10027 United States (map)

In this second session of our series on disability and dignity, we will examine the long history of Western philosophers who deny that disabled people have lives worthy of living, as well as those who dissent from this view. Both Aristotle and Plato claimed that disabled infants should be exposed to the elements and not permitted to take their place in the city, which inaugurated a long tradition of philosophers claiming that the lives of the disabled were not worth living or did not possess the protections entailed by human dignity. What would need to be the case to reject their views and argue that disability did not preclude one from a flourishing life? And what might be the implications of such a view for those who are not disabled?

On Tuesday, February 25, at 6:30 PM, join the Morningside Institute for this dinner seminar in Earl Hall with Justin Hawkins (CUIMC) on disability and human dignity. Dinner will be provided.
