In recent years, critics from both left and right have criticized capitalism for its corrosive effects on our society’s moral and social frameworks. This concern, however, is not new. In this seminar, Prof. Pierre Force (Columbia) will discuss how Adam Smith and the first economists understood the conflict between wealth and a moral society and sought to use their emerging science to resolve it.
This dinner seminar is open to all undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates. It is one of many Living the Core seminars this semester, examining broader questions in light of the texts and authors of Columbia’s Core Curriculum.
