Luther and Aquinas

At the heart of the Protestant Reformation lay an argument over justification: how was it that a fallible human being could become righteous in the eyes of a perfectly just God? This seminar examines the different understandings of justification of Martin Luther and Thomas Aquinas. In a final session, we will look at how those views have unfolded in our own time, especially in the debate between Anders Nygren and Pope Benedict XVI over agape, eros, and the nature of divine love.

Dr. Nathaniel Peters (Morningside) will lead three dinner discussions that will take place at our office. It is open to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates.
