In the Wrestling with Relativism series, we will consider the problem of relativism, the idea that there are no objective truths and standards of reasoning beyond those produced by particular individuals or cultural contexts, especially as it arises in two questions. First, is relativism ultimately the reality of the human condition, or are there realities and moral norms that we can discern as objectively true? And second, how can we maintain robust philosophical, religious, and moral convictions in a way that navigates between relativism and ideology?
Dr. Nathaniel Peters (Morningside) will lead the final dinner discussion in this series, which is open to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates. We will discuss The Abolition of Man by C. S. Lewis, in particular his idea of the Tao, a moral order acknowledged by different cultures throughout history.
