According to some, a decision is good or bad depending on how much good or harm it does for how many people. But others argue that some choices are always wrong, no matter the circumstances or possible benefits. These disagreements play out over major events of history, like the dropping of the atomic bomb, but also in the moral dilemmas we face in our lives. Can you take some lives to save others, or do evil in order to attain a good outcome? In this talk, Sarah Byers (Boston College) will draw on Thomas Aquinas and Elizabeth Anscombe to help us think through the morality of actions depending on their object, end, and circumstances.
