Tom Wolfe revolutionized American journalism with his trenchant social analysis and energized prose. In his classic essay “The ‘Me’ Decade and the Third Great Awakening,” Wolfe coined one of the terms that came to define the 1970s and the ethos of the baby boomers. He argued that self-actualization and radical autonomy defined the rising generation and had effectively become a new religious movement.
